Joe-Joe's
First Flight (continued)
Joe-Joe
succeeds in his mission; he brings the moon back to
Blind Eye! Basking in the glow of the moonlight, the
joyful town celebrates Joe-Joe’s will to succeed.
As Tarpley told the story of Joe-Joe, she showed the
audience the remarkable watercolor illustrations by
E.B. Lewis. In one illustration his father holds Joe-Joe
up in the air as if Joe-Joe is an airplane. In another,
Joe-Joe flies the plane toward the moon. In the Author's
Note Tarpley provides a fascinating history lesson
about African American aviators' contributions to
the world of flying. Not only will this information
teach your child African American history, it may
also teach you a few new facts! Joe-Joe's
First Flight is a wonderful book for
any child interested in airplanes and for teaching
children to persevere in life to achieve one's dreams.
After
the presentation, we purchased a copy of Joe-Joe's
First Flight for Isaiah. We had to wrench
the book from Isaiah’s little hands so that
Tarpley could sign it. We plan to regularly share
Joe-Joe's
First Flight with Isaiah.

Love My Hair! and Bippity
Bop Barbershop.
Note:
My son, Isaiah, has a speech delay called speech apraxia.
He has been in speech therapy for almost 2 years and
has made remarkable progress. Isaiah now is able to
say several words. One word that he says very well
is “moon.” He cannot yet say “airplane,”
but he constantly tries to say it while signing it.
We use pictures of airplanes to teach colors, counting
and sorting. Discover what your child enjoys and use
it to teach.
