Isaiah's World:

A Kids Kitchen

May 13, 2006

Today we took Isaiah to his first cooking class at a new kids cooking school called "A Kids Kitchen." Isaiah has been looking forward to it all week. Harold was excited because the we would be making brownie sundaes! I like the idea of involving Isaiah in a activity that was a little different.

When the little chefs arrived arrived, Chef Michelle, the owner and instructor, gave each an apron, a cooking tool kit and a chef's hat on which each child wrote his name. She also gave each child a recipe sheet.

The class proved to be a great learning experience for Isaiah. He used several different skills:

Reading: He had to read the recipe
Math: He had to interpret measurements and measuring spoons and cups.
Fine motor skills: He had to pour ingredients in to measuring cups and spoons and handle different types of utensils.

The class reinforced principles that we had taught him at home, such as the importance of washing hands before preparing food and eating; how to crack eggs and how to use an electric mixer.

Isaiah did a great job. He frequently raised his hand to answer questions that Chef Michelle posed. He did a good job at pulling out the proper utensils from his tool kit and interpreting measurements.

However, Isaiah, still a very picky eater, did not want to eat the browning sundae after it was done. Not a problem. Harold quickly gobbled it.

We all enjoyed the class so much that I registered Isaiah for another class. I also told Karen, Isaiah's speech therapist. She agreed to hold one of Isaiah's sessions at A Kids Kitchen.

I just love it when we discover new activities for Isaiah that are both fun and educational!
