CelebratingChildren.com Launches New Column "Momma's Home" that Speaks to African-American Stay-at-Home Mothers

Evanston, IL, January 1, 2002 - CelebratingChildren.com, the premier African-American parenting website, announces a new column, "Momma's Home," written by freelance writer and stay-at-home mother, Penny Powell of Virginia Beach, VA. In "Momma's Home," Powell speaks to the growing number of African-American mothers who opt to stay at home with their young children. "Momma's Home" focuses on an important segment of the African-American community and allows CelebratingChildren.com to reach in a more personal way millions of African-American families.

"My decision to be a stay-at-home mother was one that came quite naturally for me," says Penny Powell. "Six years later, as I continue my journey as an at-home parent, I have learned that a strong desire to perform this unique job, combined with patience, creativity and flexibility, can make stay-at-home parenting as exciting and meaningful as those jobs typically believed to be the most rewarding. It's amazing how a role that comes with no financial paycheck can make our lives feel so rich," she says. "Through my column, 'Momma's Home,' I will take readers inside my heart and home, my mind and soul, as I aim to provide a level of inspiration, support and creative ideas to stay-at-home parents."

The increase in the number of African-American stay-at-home mothers is due in part to a general feeling within the African-American community for a need to return to traditional African and African-American values that emphasize the importance of family in the development of children. Coupled with this is the growing economic strength in the African-American community allowing African-American families to live comfortably on one salary.

CelebratingChildren.com offers articles, tips, books, and gifts that address the needs and concerns of African-American parents of young children. In addition to traditional parenting articles, CelebratingChildren.com examines the authors, editors, illustrators and other creative forces behind Afrocentric children's products. By focusing on the people, places and products that recognize the promise of the African-American child, CelebratingChildren.com helps parents find ways to make every day in the lives of their children a celebration.
