CelebratingChildren.com Launches New Column “Suddenly Single” that Speaks to African American Single Mothers

Evanston, IL, March 26, 2001 – CelebratingChildren.com, the premier African American parenting website, announces a new column, “Suddenly Single,” written by freelance writer and single mother of two, Tisha Tyler of San Diego, CA.  In “Suddenly Single”, Tyler writes inspirational articles exploring the joys and challenges of single parenthood.  “Suddenly Single” focuses on an important segment of the African American community and allows CelebratingChildren.com to reach in a more personal way millions of African American families.

When asked about her thoughts on “Suddenly Single” Tisha had the following to say:

"’Our worst fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves: ‘Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’ Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God; your playing small doesn't serve the world.’” -- Nelson Mandela

"Nelson Mandela hit it right on the nose, I have taken his words and applied it to my life. This is how I look at single parenting. I am a fearless single mother, who is proud of the awesome challenge that God has bestowed upon me. I have realized that not only does my playing small offer a tremendous disservice to the world, but most importantly, it provides a disservice to my children and all of the other single mothers who are searching for a ray of hope, something or someone who will speak up for them to say, 'Yes, you are a survivor; you can not give up. You will make it despite the odds.' My desire is to empower as many mothers (single and otherwise) to keep praying, striving and surviving."

People become single parents due to many different circumstances, including death, divorce, abandonment, or decision to have or adopt a child without being married or in a committed relationship.  Whatever the reason, single parenting often brings with it a set of concerns that are not always present where there are 2 parents in the household.

CelebratingChildren.com offers articles, tips, books, and gifts that help parents find creative ways to maintain an Afrocentric spirit both in their children's everyday lives and in the celebration of special occasions. The articles supplement traditional parenting resources by examining the creative forces behind the trends in children's products. By focusing on the people, places and products that recognize the promise of the African American child, CelebratingChildren.com helps parents find ways to make every day in the lives of their children a celebration.
