Shannon King Nash, Esq., CPA
Shannon Nash is a seasoned attorney
and CPA who has practiced with a Fortune 50 corporation, several
large law firms and a big six accounting firm. She has served clients
and practiced on both the east and west coasts and recently completed
an international assignment in Europe where she provided counsel
to affiliates in 20 countries. She has also served as counsel to
a large corporate foundation.
Ms. Nash has participated on many panels and written several nonprofit,
tax and business related pieces. She authored the The
Vault Guide to Tax Law Careers, a book published by
Vault Inc in the spring of 2004 and which provides an in-depth overview
of the tax legal profession. She also wrote, Helping The
Nonprofit Client, a user-friendly guide on tax and corporate
law issues affecting tax-exempt organizations and published by Kleinrock
Publishing in 2004.
Ms. Nash is very active in professional organizations. She served
as the Secretary of the American Bar Association (“ABA”)
Tax Section, a professional organization representing over 20,000
members, making her the first African-American officer and the youngest
officer since the ABA Tax Section’s inception in 1878. She
also served as chair of the National Bar Association’s Tax
Committee for eight years. She previously served as a co-chair to
the ABA Tax Section’s Diversity Committee and received one
of the ABA Tax Section's 2000 Nolan Fellow Awards, bestowed upon
professionals of achievement and promise.
Ms. Nash also chaired the Tax Exempt Tool Kit program for the ABA
Tax Section. This pro-bono program is designed to help small nonprofit
organizations work through the maze of laws, accounting and finance
records and operational issues that face them. The first Tax Exempt
Tool Kit program was held in August 2001 in Chicago, followed by
a second program in May 2002 in Washington, D.C., and third program
in October 2002 in Los Angeles. It is now an annual program, held
every May in Washington DC. The materials from the Tax Exempt Tool
Kit are available free of charge on the ABA Tax Section’s
website and are being translated into several languages.
Ms. Nash serves her community and volunteers her time in several
charitable organizations. She was appointed by the Thousand Oaks
California City Council to serve on the Community Events Funding
Committee, a committee responsible for awarding grants to various
501(c)(3) organizations for community events and sports facilities.
She also serves on the board of the Reachable Heights, a Ventura
County parent education charity and volunteers with Cure Autism
Now, a national research nonprofit.
Ms. Nash received her Bachelor’s degree in accounting and
her law degree from the University of Virginia. She is a member
of the state bars of Virginia and D.C. and holds a C.P.A. license
from the State of Virginia. Ms. Nash has two children and in her
spare time likes to read, write non-fiction books and advocate for
