Bermudian Penny Powell talks about her stay-at-home career in journalism...

Penny Powell, a Bermudian living in Virginia Beach, Virginia, has recently been signed on as the newest columnist for CelebratingChildren.com, the premier African-American parenting website.

Penny, the daughter of Sister Caroline Burgess and the late Ainsey Burgess, a freelance writer and a stay-at-home mother, is extremely excited about this venture.

In the column, "Momma's Home," she speaks to the growing number of African-American mothers who opt to stay at home with their young children. According to a press release from Celebrating Children, the column focuses on an important segment of the African-American community and allows CelebratingChildren.com to reach in a more personal way millions of African American families.

"My decision to be a stay-at-home mother was one that came quite naturally for me," says Penny. "Six years later, as I continue my journey as an at-home parent, I have learned that a strong desire to perform this unique job, combined with patience, creativity and flexibility, can make stay-at-home parenting as exciting and meaningful as those jobs typically believed to be the most rewarding. It's amazing how a role that comes with no financial paycheck can make our lives feel so rich. Through my column, "Momma's Home," I will take readers inside my heart and home, my mind and soul, as I aim to provide a level of inspiration, support and creative ideas to stay-at-home parents."

In her first column, Penny talks about an encounter she had with Mr. Norris Burgess when she was in Bermuda recently. She relates to her readers how Mr. Burgess, whose wife Jeannette was a stay-at-home mother to their nine children, encouraged her to be a stay-at-home mother and how he believes that because his wife was a stay-at-home mother, their nine children are all successful today.

Bermudians who are looking for parenting advice can log on to CelebratingChildren.com.

Penny and her husband Collin who is an officer in the U.S. Navy, have one son, 6-year old Caleb. She has also written a children's book that she hopes to have published soon.
